Sebastian Herkner enthuses the German design scene – with award-winning designs that combine traditional craftsmanship with modern techniques. Born 1981 in Bad Mergentheim he works freelance since 2006 after studying product design at the Offenbach University of Art and Design.
Sebastian Herkner designs furniture, lights and tableware for manufacturers such as Moroso, Carl Mertens or Classicon – including probably his best-known design of the Bell Table, for which he was honoured with the Red Dot Design Award 2010. He works also as an interior and exhibition designer and lives in Offenbach.
He is one of Rosenthal’s most sought after designers and maintains a close dialogue at all times with the Creative Centre and Production. The delicate beauty »Falda« as well as the artful collage of porcelain and glass »Collana« are created by the young designer. Strict and straightforward geometric appears his new vase collection »Ode«. At first glance, the design appears to have a classical style reminiscent of the columns so prevalent in the architecture of the ancient world, but look more closely and its precise workmanship reveals a thoroughly modern new piece of interior design.
Cédric Ragot set up his own design studio after graduating from the French National Institute for Advanced Studies in Design, I`ENSCI-Les Ateliers. Among other things, he designs furniture for some of today’s leading furniture manufacturers.
In doing so, Cédric Ragot remains true to his philosophy: “There’s a great deal of variation in the way the visible part of my works can turn out…in any case, however, I try to find a surprising solution to a given task. This means I have to combine the functional appearance of an object with a suggested conceptual and stylistic solution in order to create greater possibilities of choice corresponding to everybody’s emotional and spiritual longings.”
With the dynamic vase collections »Squall« und »Fast«, the French designer has achieved the seemingly impossible: capturing the momentum of movement and reproducing this in porcelain. His new creation, »Geode«, combines the mineral content and structure of rocks with a smooth vase design.
Charlotte von der Lancken (*1978) studied industrial design at the Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. In 2004, she and three partners founded what is probably one of the most famous avant-garde design studios in the world: Front Design. Many of her designs, including designs for brands such as Kartell, Hansgrohe, Stelton, Thonet and Moooi, are already regarded as classics.
Charlotte von der Lancken likes to experiment with new techniques and materials, designs installations for shops, and gives presentations at universities. Having been awarded several design prizes, she has now formed her own label – CVDL. The Swedish designer lives and works freelance in Stockholm.
Delicate morning dew drops, clinging like tiny jewels to blades of grass and petals, were the inspiration for Charlotte von der Lancken’s design Dagg. She has captured the beauty of this moment in a simple vase. Glistening crystal droplets dangle from the 27-cm-high conical vase, as if ready to roll off it at any moment. The size and clarity of the droplets almost give them the appearance of tiny mirrors and turn them into very special gems.
Hanna Krüger (born in 1979 in Berlin) initially trained to become a furniture carpenter before studying at the Werkakademie in Kassel. She followed on with a Product Design degree focussing on furniture design and exhibition architecture. "In the design phase I am, above all, interested in the simultaneity of the initial material and the resulting new object. Designing for me means a process-oriented action in the respective context for the specific product. An important subject in my work is the moment of creation and the production, in which people, material, machines and cultural context cross encounter one another. This moment must be re-choreographed each time and follows its very own rules. The next important moment is the one in which the product begins to shine out from within, existing only for itself and becoming self-explanatory."
The subtle double bowls by Josef Hoffmann inspired her to create the vase and bowl colletion »JOS«. She stacked bowls and mugs on top of each other, in all imaginable sizes, shapes, materials and patterns. The result of this creative process was these artistic glass collection. At the heart of the design is the multifunctional nature of the items. The combination of clear and satin-finish glass with elements of cut glass, which come together on a sumptuous gold finish, is strikingly beautiful.
Christine Rathmann (*1981) was born in Kiel and studied industrial design at Muthesius University in her home city. Since 2009, she has worked as a designer for various companies in the furniture industry and also works freelance in the field of product, furniture and graphic design. The designer lives and works in Bünde in North Rhine-Westphalia.
Christine Rathmann works intuitively, creates atmospheres, has a passion for colour. Tones of yellow, green, blue, red and pink swirl across the faceted surfaces of the porcelain vases like a kaleidoscope.
The Hot Spots collection offers an eye-catching and bright colour gradient that smoothly tapers off into a single colour. This creates a changeable piece, which is both a decorative object and functional vase for creating effective flower displays, and which also works especially well as an ensemble. „I like it when little details in objects surprise people, so the observer quickly develops an affinity for them,“ explains the designer. And this is what gives Hot Spots its appearance as an enticing combination of shapes and colours – always changing depending on the light level and viewing angle.
Dror Benshetrit is the initiator and proprietor of “studio dror”, a product and interior design studio and creative consultancy in New York. He studied art and design at the Design Academy in Eindhoven and the Center for Art Education at Tel Aviv Museum of Art. This multicultural training enabled him to develop his own unique style of design that can be seen in every project conceived by “studio dror”. Dror realised projects for Yigal Azrouel, Inc. (New York), Kiehl’s (New York), Material ConneXion (New York), Edelkoort Studio (France) and Trend Union (France).
To understand Dror Benshetrit’s work, one needs to grasp the logic and thought processes that underlies his style. His focus is mainly on innovations that emerge through new uses of materials, technology and forms, whereby he also deals with the origin of motion. He coaxes new forms out of traditional materials and constantly varies and reinterprets techniques to spectacular effect. The development of his “Vase of Phases” has thus gone through several stages of formation.
Office for Product Design is an international design and consulting studio based in Hong Kong, and was established in 2007 by Nicol Boyd (born 1976) and Tomas Rosén (born 1975). With their thoughtful product ideas and designs in the fields of consumer electronics, lighting, furniture and homeware, the two designers have already won numerous prestigious awards. In 2015, the duo designed the simple and functional Kitchen by Thomas collection of kitchen utensils for Rosenthal GmbH, which secured prizes such as the 2015 Red Dot Design Award: Product Design.
A cylindrical body and an asymmetric, tapered collar – for Scottish-Swedish designer duo Office for Product Design, those represent the essence of a modern vase, which provides the perfect stage for creative floral displays. Nicol Boyd and Tomas Rosén achieved to create with their new vase collection »Fondale« an extravagant design sculpture. The purist design is underlined by a glossy surface inside the cone that is available in platinum, gleaming gold, plain white or striking black and produces a reflective effect that accentuates individual flowers or grasses. A delicate lattice design makes the flowers almost float in the vase and makes the creation part of a distinctive design culture.
Helmi Remes (born 1983) has worked in Finland as a freelance glass artist since training as a glass-blower at Tavastia Vocational College, where she graduated in 2010. Her work has already been exhibited in Germany, Denmark and Finland and is characterised by the way in which it consistently addresses perfection and imperfection in terms of material, form and function.
Balancing perfection with imperfection and beauty with uneven shapes, Helmi Remes has designed a new vase series made from transparent glass: »Riite is inspired by the old Venetian method of glassmaking referred to as merletto, meaning 'lace', with a delicate structure that is reflected in the fine surface of the glass strips. The interplay of different lengths, rounded edges and tiny imperfections in the glass provides impressive evidence of the handcrafted artistry of the glass-blowing and skilfully draws the eye over the vibrant surface. The crystalline vases, each one unique, act as a powerful design statement on the perfection of the imperfect – one that is made wonderfully even without any flowers. Riite is limited to 49 pieces worldwide.
